"This priority report of the Waitangi Tribunal's Housing policy and services kaupapa inquiry addresses 79 claims concerning Māori homelessness. The claimants alleged that the Crown had breached the Treaty of Waitangi because its legislation, policies, and national strategies since 2009 had failed both to adequately address homelessness and severe housing deprivation and to meet the needs of Māori under the Treaty. The report raises the 'shocking' living conditions of many Māori who have returned to their whenua. While this poverty is largely hidden from public attention, the Tribunal said, it is all too familiar to the claimants and their witnesses and should be unacceptable in contemporary New Zealand"--Page 2 of book cover.
