"As many publications do, this one comes to you not as originally planned, but in a form that reflects the conditions and parameters around it. Initially prompted by a desire to consider the role that small-scale, emerging or independent initiatives play within a broader arts ecology and society in contemporary Aotearoa, As needed, as possible builds outward, upon conversations with friends and colleagues around how to make a life, and a living, in and around art. It aims to make a modest contribution to a wider field of discussion thinking through the kind of spaces and culture we wish to be working in, and how we might arrive there. In our invitation to contributors, written in late 2019, we wrote that this publication hopes to 'prioritise processes of thinking and doing over the presentation of fully realised forms,' and that contributors were encouraged to 'experiment with thought-in-motion, to offer provocations, hypotheses, predictions.' What follows is a series of speculative, reflective and experimental contributions from artists, writers, curators and arts workers who have contributed to the development of contemporary art in small-scale and independent initiatives in Aotearoa over the past few decades. Originally conceptualised as a printed publication, As needed, as possible began unfolding in April 2020 as PDF downloads of individual contributions that were released periodically. These were published online, as they were ready, while Aotearoa moved between Covid-19 alert levels"--page 3.
