Summary: Sopolemalama Filipe Tohi has been a practising artist in New Zealand for more than 30 years. This book provides an insight into both his early years as an artist, as well as his contemporary interpretations of lalava, which have brought him international recognition. In an effort to understand lalava, he has deconstructed the patterns, slowly unravelling the intricate designs before literally turning them inside out. In this process, he is not trying to revive a lost knowledge, but is trying to understand the cultural knowledge hidden in the layers.
