Sean Chen was born in China in 1956 and moved to Auckland in 1988, where he worked in advertising before choosing to work as a full time artist. In 2003 he completed a Post Graduate Degree at Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland. He sees the landmarks of Auckland city in a fresh light and makes staid, time-honoured structures bend and strain, as if they are trying to break free of their foundations. Chen also takes liberties with colour, perspective and geography. Chen’s unconventional use of colour, active brushwork and lively paint surface result in strong pictures with staying power.
