Captain Cruise was in charge of the military detachment on H.M.S. Dromedary which visited New Zealand in 1820 to load kauri spars. Cruise visited the Bay of Islands, Whangaroa, Hokianga, the Waitemata and the Thames and gives a unique account of the country and of Māori society in the inter-tribal war period. Cf. Bagnall.
