He completed his PhD at the University of Sydney in 1992 and since then has worked as a columnist and art critic for the Australian, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian Financial Review, Art Monthly Australia and the Sydney Review. He has also lectured in art history at the National Art School, Sydney and since 2009 has been Head of Art at the Sydney Grammar School.
