  • Information found: v. 16, p. 273 ("In 1970 an anti-communist military junta overthrew the Sihanouk regime, provoking Communist insurgents in the countryside, popularly called the Khmer Rouge (Red Khmer), to initiate guerrilla warfare against the government. On April 17, 1975, rebels seized power in Phnom Penh. The new revolutionary government attempted to remake the country in a radical image, driving the urban population into the countryside and executing thousands, perhaps even millions of Kampucheans. But historical suspicions and frontier disagreements between Kampuchea and Vietnam were revised, leading to border clashes and, early in 1979, to an invasion and occupation by Vietnamese troops. A new government, communist in orientation but dominated by Vietnam, then took power in Phnom Penh.")
