In Jan. 1968 the Department of Māori Affairs merged with the Department of Island Territories to become the Māori and Island Affairs Department. In Oct. 1968, it changed its name to Department of Māori and Island Affairs. In 1975, Island Affairs was removed from the portfolio, merging in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The department's name was changed back to Department of Māori Affairs. On 1 July 1989 the Department of Māori Affairs was dissolved and its functions taken over by the Ministry of Māori Affairs which was established on that date, and the Iwi Transition Agency which was established on 1 Oct. 1989
