History: The New Zealand Dept. of Public Health was organized in 1900. In 1909, it absorbed the Hospitals and Charitable Aid Dept. and became the Dept. of Public Health, Hospitals, and Charitable Aid. Under the Health Act of 1920, the name was changed to Dept. of Health. This department comprised the divisions of public hygiene, hospitals, nursing, school hygiene, maternal welfare, and dental hygiene.
