She took her first degree in Economics at Delhi University and received her MA and MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She completed her PhD at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London. In 1994 she joined the Politics Department at Goldsmiths College where she was elected as an Academician of the Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences in 2003.
