In 1965 Manukau County Council and Manurewa Borough Council were absorbed into the new Manukau City Council. In 1989 the functions of Papatoetoe City Council and Howick Borough Council, and some of the functions of the Tamaki City Council were taken over by Manukau City Council. Some of its functions were taken over by Papakura District Council
