The College originally formed in 1895 as an evening school under the name 'Auckland Technical School' with volunteer tutors teaching technical skills. In 1905 the school was renamed 'Auckland Technical College' and renamed again in 1912 to 'Seddon Memorial Technical College' after the former Prime minister. The college function as a secondary school specialising in technical subjects and continued to teach evening classes as well as day school. The college functioned as a secondary specialising in technical subjects. Adult vocational education was provided through evening classes. The ongoing expansion of the college had led to the adminstrative structure and buildings becoming inadequate to meet future growth. In 1957 the New Zealand Department of Education approved a decision to divide the college into two separate institutions: a technical high school, and a senior 'polytechnic division', with both schools governed by the same board of managers. Following the resignation of Horace Scott as principal in February 1960, the Board of Managers proposed appointing two principals: one for the high school and one for the polytechnic division. This received ministerial approval in July 1960. Rod Keir was appointed as principal of the Polytechnic Division in 1960. The name Auckland Technical Institute was adopted from the beginning of 1963, although the institute didn't become an independent entity until August 1964 (The last meeting of the combined Board of Governors for Seddon Memorial College was held on 23 July 1964). ATI remained at the Wellesley Street site and Seddon Memorial Technical College (later renamed Seddon High School) relocated to Motions Road, Western Springs.
