She studied in the Victorian Society Summer Schools in both Rhode Island and England. Harwood is a Professor Emeritus from Virginia Commonwealth University, where she previously served as interior design Department Chair for programs in Virginia and Qatar, and as the coordinator of the MFA graduate program. In 1973, Harwood became an associate professor at the University of Texas at Austin. During the summers of 1977-1981, Harwood taught at UT's Winedale Institute in Historic Preservation summer institute.
