"Tough, aggressive and uncompromising, boxing is often perceived to be the ultimate "masculine" sport, a sport where heroes are made and destroyed, both literally and in myth. Woodward's text explores the masculine identity, and goes on to use the sport and spectacle of boxing to introduce discussion of the nature of physical embodiment, the relationship between the private and public body, the role of celebrity, and the formation and representation of identities. The text uses UK and US ethnographic research as well as portrayals of boxing from film, literature and the press to illustrate themes for study in masculinity and identity.
