Haas reflects on the influence of his German Jewish heritage and the extent to which his focus was, in part, a rejection of Europe, Germany in particular. His father, Karl Haas, had been told by his father, Dr Ludwig Haas, leader of the German Democratic Party, to go away as far as he could. He foresaw the evils that were coming with the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party. This memoir is about stories of people.
